Julius is the oldest gay bar in Manhattan. Opened in 1840 first as a grocery store and then as a bar in 1864, recently in 1966 the place proclaimed itself as a gay bar. The National Register of Historic Places listed Julius as a part of the history of LGBT civil rights movement and the inside of the bar remains exactly as it was in 1966.
